This Weekend: The GW sailing team closes the fall season with a pair of Atlantic Coast Championship competitions, which get underway Saturday and conclude Sunday. The coed ACCs are set to be held at Old Dominion University while the women's will be held at St. Mary's College of Maryland, as head coach John Pearce and his program look to have a strong finish to the most successful fall season in program history.
Coed ACCs: The No. 12 Colonials will compete in a field of 18, looking to ride the momentum of their third-place finish at the MAISA Coed Conference Championship two weeks ago. The Colonials will use a rotation of skipper Brendan Shanahan with crew Mercedes McPhee in A Division and skipper Kai Friesecke with crew Riley Legault in B Division. Andrew Sheerin will serve as an alternate skipper and Henry Young as alternate crew.
Women's ACCs: Ranked fifth in the country, the Colonials will send a larger contingent of sailors with wind conditions playing a part in determining rotations. Stronger winds are expected Saturday, while lighter conditions are forecast for Sunday. Skippers heading to the event will be Maria Sinagra, Hannah McNomee, India Johnstone and Miranda Bakos, while crew will be Madison Oleson, Gabriella Malek, Belle Strachan and Kia Olsson.
Pearce's Points: "Both the coed and women's ACCs bring the best teams from the MAISA, NEISA and SAISA conferences to battle for bragging rights in the capstone regatta of the fall season. At coeds, most of the top teams in the country will be there and it is always a hotly contested event. At the women's, we are excited for the opportunity to follow up our regatta win at the MAISA Fall Women's Championship with another strong showing."
