WASHINGTON - The George Washington volleyball team will host the two teams it faced in last year's Atlantic 10 Championship when it takes on Saint Louis (Friday, 7 p.m.) and Dayton (Saturday, 7 p.m.) in a pair of crucial A-10 Conference matches this weekend at the Charles E. Smith Center.
GW has won four matches in a row and 12 of its last 14 dating back to early September. Last weekend, the Colonials earned a pair of road victories at VCU and Davidson to keep pace with Saint Louis and Dayton at the top of the conference standings.
Freshman Kelsey Clark earned her first career award from the conference when she was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week on Monday. She contributed 23 kills on a .452 attack percentage along with three blocks in the Colonials' two victories.
Junior Chidima Osuchukwu continues the lead the Atlantic 10 while ranking third overall in NCAA Division I with 98 total blocks on the season. She also ranks second in the conference and 17th in the nation with 278 total kills in addition to pacing the A-10 with 1.40 blocks per set (25th in NCAA).
Senior Maddy Doyle leads the A-10 with 288 digs and now has 1,459 for her career, good for second all-time in program history. She also ranks second in the conference with an average of 4.11 digs per set and has been an anchor on GW's backline with her precision passing leading to GW's 13.50 kills pet set, which ranks second in the league.
Senior Jordan Timmer ranks second in the conference and seventh in Division I with 773 total assists. Her 11.04 assists per set put her second in the A-10 and 33rd in the nation. Timmer has posted seven double-doubles this season to bring her career total to 21.
GW split two meetings with Saint Louis last season, including a 3-0 sweep in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship. The Billikens have won 14 matches in a row entering Friday's tilt and are led by reigning A-10 Player of the Week Danielle Rygelski, who leads the conference in both total kills (295) and service aces (34). Saint Louis leads the all-time series, 10-6.
Dayton has won nine straight matches entering Friday's meeting at George Mason. The Colonials defeated the Flyers, 3-2, during the regular season at the Smith Center last year, but lost to Dayton, 3-1, in the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championship match. Dayton leads the all-time series, 27-11.
Reigning A-10 Player of the Year Alaina Turner leads the Flyers with 258 kills, while the trio of Jill Loiars (130), Amber Erhahon (114) and Jenna Jendryk (56) have also passed the 100-winner mark on the season.
