WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team returned to the Mount Vernon Softball Field last week to begin spring semester preparation for the 2015 season. The Colonials were able to hold their first full-field practice on Thursday.
The Colonials, under the direction of fifth-year Head Coach Stacey Schramm, practiced defense outdoors and utilized the outfield turf portion of the field while hitting in batting cages indoors. The Buff and Blue were able to take the to the infield for the first time on Thursday, and will continue to take advantage of the indoor amenities in the Mount Vernon Campus' Lloyd Gym for live offensive situations as well as strength and conditioning training to prepare for opening day.
GW returns 14 letterwinners and welcomes six newcomers to the squad after graduating three student-athletes last spring. Coach Schramm looks forward to seeing what her squad can accomplish in 2015, while seniors Samantha Dos Santos and Victoria Valos hope to guide the team with their experience as team captains this season.
"We have so much individual talent, and we're truly working on each individual gaining confidence in all aspects of the game, which will lead to success for the team," said Coach Schramm. "I could not be more proud of our team captains, as well as all of our upperclassmen, who know what they want to accomplish and are taking this team to get it."
The Colonials open the 2015 season at Auburn for the Plainsman Invite as they take on Evansville on Feb. 6 for the first of five tournament games. The team will open their home season on March 6 as St. John's comes to town for the Colonial Classic.
Fans can keep up with the team through Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.
