WASHINGTON-The George Washington's women's tennis team opens its 2015 slate on Sunday with a 1 p.m. match against Atlantic Region opponent Morgan State at the Southeast Tennis Center in Washington, DC.
Led by second-year Head Coach Greg Munoz, the Colonials look to build upon a youthful base, with just two juniors and no seniors on the roster. After losing Isabella Escobar and four-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference Team member Leah Pascarella to graduation, GW returns All-Conference selections in junior Lana Robins and sophomore Taylor Nederlander.
The Colonials wrapped 2014 with a 9-6 overall record, posting a 5-2 mark in conference play and reaching the A-10 semifinals.
Robins picked up an All-Conference First Team nod after posting a 17-10 overall singles record, going 8-6 in the spring, primarily competing at the top spot in GW's lineup. The Bellevue, Washington native notched three A-10 Performer of the Week awards in 2014, and looks to overcome a fall injury to become an impact player again this spring.
"Lana was sidelined with an ankle injury during the fall," said Coach Munoz. "She is recovering and working hard to get back to top form very soon."
The Colonials are looking to sophomore Taylor Nederlander for a solid spring after a strong freshman campaign. Nederlander earned All-Conference Second Team honors in 2014, compiling an overall 17-9 singles record and an 8-6 dual-match mark competing primarily at the No. 3 slot. The Laguna Beach, California native went 5-1 against conference foes and once earned A-10 Rookie Performer of the Week honors. Classmate Allison Hansen will pair with Nederlander as a doubles tandem.
"Allison and Taylor work well together, and Allison has improved her consistency to compliment her aggressive style," said Coach Munoz. "Taylor clinched some big matches last year. The level is higher now, but I look to her to be the backbone of that team and to pull off some strong singles results as well. "
The Buff and Blue are looking forward to a breakout freshman campaign from Teodora Radosavljevic, who wrapped up the fall season with a 9-3 singles record.
"Teodora is coming off a strong fall, and I look for her to do big things this spring," said Coach Munoz. "Teodora and Lana have a good chance to break into the national rankings this year if they remain healthy and positive with their games."
Sophomore Grace Egger will team up with Radosavljevic for a strong doubles team. The pair earned a No. 10 Atlantic Region Ranking from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association heading into the spring season.
"Grace has improved tremendously in her doubles, with her partner Teodora," said Coach Munoz. "They pulled off a ranked win this fall, and I look to them to break into the national rankings this spring."
Freshman Marie-Louise Decamps finished the fall with a 6-5 singles record and seeks to keep improving to have a strong rookie campaign for the Colonials.
"Marie-Louise gets better every day. She works very hard and is adapting her game to the fast indoor courts," stated Coach Munoz. "Marie-Louise will be teaming up with Lana Robins in doubles."
Sophomore Egle Jakuciunaite finished the 2014 spring season with a 6-6 singles record and will be called upon to make an impact this spring.
"Egle had a solid year at No. 3 singles last season," said Coach Munoz. "I expect her to be a big contributor this year in the singles lineup."
