GW Volleyball Downs Southeastern Louisiana, 3-1

GW (4-0) posted season-high totals of 61 kills and 13.5 team blocks in the victory while out-digging Southeastern Louisiana (2-3) by a 61-56 advantage.
The Colonials never trailed in the first set, opening on a 6-0 run and leading by as many as seven points en route to a 25-19 victory. GW hit .205 in the frame with senior Kelsey Newman and sophomore Loren Williams both tallying five winners.
The teams fought through eight ties and three lead changes in the second set, but GW was able to close strong and extend its lead to 2-0. Tied at 17-17, the Lions pulled ahead on an attack error to take a one-point lead. The Colonials responded by stringing together an 8-1 run to close the set for the 25-19 win.
GW was dealt its first set loss of the season in the third frame when Southeastern Louisiana got on the board with a 25-22 win. The Colonials had won 11 consecutive sets dating back to last weekend's season opener before the third set.
GW responded to the set loss with a 25-21 win in the fourth set to clinch the match. Four different players posted at least four kills in the final frame while the defense registered 17 digs and 2.0 blocks.
Friday's win marked the third straight match that three players posted double-digit kills.
Newman led the attack with 15 kills and 10 digs for her third double-double in four games while Williams added 13 kills, seven digs and three block assists.
Sophomore Chidima Osuchukwu added 12 kills and seven digs along with five blocks (one solo, four assists).
Junior Maggie Skjelbred was a force at the net with a career-high eight blocks (one solo, seven assists) while junior Maddy Doyle (16 digs, 10 assists, one ace) and freshman Christina Porada (12 digs, one ace) anchored the back line.
Junior Jordan Timmer facilitated the attack with 21 assists and four blocks while sophomore Emily Clemens added 15 helpers.
The win marks the Colonials' third 4-0 start since 2006 and the second time under Head Coach Amanda Ault.
GW resumes action at the James Madison Invitational on Saturday against Hampton (10:00 a.m.) and the host Dukes (7:30 p.m.).
