GW Volleyball Sweeps Fordham, 3-0

WASHINGTON - The George Washington volleyball team concluded its opening weekend of Atlantic 10 conference play with a 3-0 sweep of Fordham on Saturday night at the Charles E. Smith Center. Set scores were 25-18, 25-18, 25-23.
GW (11-4, 2-0 A-10) moves to 2-0 in the Atlantic 10 for the first time since the 2003 season and improved its all-time record against Fordham (0-15, 0-2 A-10) to 30-7.
The Colonials matched their season-high with 11 service aces on the night and posted statistical advantages in blocks (9.0-2.0), digs (39-34) and kills (43-39).
Junior Jordan Timmer recorded a career-high four of GW's 11 aces and added 28 assists, eight digs and four block assists on the evening.
GW opened the match by hitting .522 in the first set with just one attack error while posting five service aces and four team blocks en route to a 25-15 win.
The momentum carried over to the second set as the Colonials used a balanced attack to build a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-18 win. Sophomore Chidima Osuchukwu and junior Maggie Skjelbred each tallied four kills in the frame while three other players recorded winners.
The third set was the closest of the match with three tie scores, but the Colonials never lost control and clinched the sweep with a 25-23 victory. GW had built an 18-12 lead before a 7-2 run by Fordham pulled the Rams within one point of the lead at 20-19. Following a timeout, the Colonials moved ahead, 24-21, but Fordham used two straight points to cut the lead to one before a kill by sophomore Loren Williams clinched the match for GW.
Osuchukwu led all players with 13 kills on a .435 attack percentage and added five blocks (one solo, four assists) to lead the Colonials.
Williams finished with eight kills, six digs and two block assists while Skjelbred swung .333 with six kills and three block assists.
GW will play one match next weekend when it visits George Mason on Friday night in Farifax, Va. The game will be the second Revolutionary Rivalry contest of the season after GW women's soccer's 2-1 victory over George Mason on Saturday.
