GW Volleyball Opens A-10 Schedule at Home

GW (9-4) has won three of its last four matches following a triumph over district rival Georgetown last week and a 2-1 mark at the Crossroads of America Classic at Valparaiso last weekend.
Sophomore Chidima Osuchukwu was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week and the ECAC Co-Player of the Week after hitting .476 with 49 kills and 15 blocks across four matches last week. Osuchukwu currently ranks 24th in Division I and second in the A-10 with 1.42 blocks per set. She also ranks 33rd in the nation and second in the conference with 61 total blocks while ranking second on the team with 153 kills.
As a team, the Colonials pace the Atlantic 10 and are listed in the top-15 in three national statistical categories. GW is seventh out of 328 teams in assists per set (13.60), ninth in kills per set (14.65) and 13th in attacks per set (38.00). The Colonials also lead the A-10 in hitting percentage (.242) and blocks per set (2.73).
Juniors Jordan Timmer and Maddy Doyle both pace the conference in respective categories. Timmer's average of 11.37 assists per set leads the A-10 and ranks 15th in Division I while Doyle leads the conference and ranks 50th in the nation with an average of 4.67 digs per set.
Senior Kelsey Newman continues to pace GW's attack, leading the team with 157 kills and ranking third in the conference with 3.93 kills per set.
Rhode Island carries a 9-4 record into the weekend. The Rams started the season 8-0, but have lost four of their last five matches. Franki Darnold leads the Atlantic 10 with 4.43 kills per set and has tallied 204 winners on the season. Layne Self is the top blocker in the conference thus far this season with 1.54 rejections per set and a total of 71 blocks.
Fordham is 0-13 to start the 2014 season and will visit George Mason on Friday night ahead of Saturday's contest. The Rams are led by Lisa Hipp (103 kills) and Brenna Delsing (91 kills).
