GW Volleyball Handles Sacramento State, 3-0, to Open Weekend

GW (8-3) hit .261 (46k-16e-115a) in the match led by double-digit kill efforts from senior Kelsey Newman, sophomore Chidima Osuchukwu and sophomore Loren Williams.
Defensively, the Colonials limited Sacramento State (4-9) to a .078 (30k-21e-116a) attack percentage while posting 10.0 team blocks and a 53-44 advantage in digs.
Newman tallied her fifth double-double of the season with 13 kills and 11 digs in addition to two block assists while Osuchukwu swung .500 with 12 kills and four block assists. Williams added 10 kills, five digs and two block assists.
GW committed just four attack errors in the first set, swinging .361 in the frame en route to a 25-18 victory. The teams traded points until a 7-7 tie before the Colonials built a comfortable advantage at 20-11 on the heels of a 13-4 run before clinching the win.
The second set featured 13 ties and four lead changes but GW's defense forced 11 attack errors to ignite a set-closing 9-3 run, as the Colonials took a 2-0 lead with a 25-19 win.
GW rallied once again in the third set after facing a three-point deficit at 16-19. Following a timeout, a kill by Newman sent the Colonials on a match-clinching 9-2 run to earn the 25-21 victory. The final run saw Newman tally five of her match-high 13 kills and GW's defense forced three attack errors to clinch the sweep.
Junior Maddy Doyle finished with a match-high 23 digs for her third 20+ dig performance of the season. Junior Maggie Skjelbred led all players with six block assists at the net.
GW had two players finish with double-digit assists in the match. Junior Jordan Timmer had 21 helpers to go with five digs and two kills while sophomore Emily Clemens added 18 assists, three digs and two block assists.
GW will face Murray State on Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. ET before concluding the tournament against host Valparaiso at 8:00 p.m. ET.
