GW Volleyball Splits on Day 1 of Colonials Challenge

WASHINGTON - The George Washington volleyball team opened competition at the Colonials Challenge on Friday at the Charles E. Smith Center, sweeping Columbia in the first match of the day before falling, 3-0, to Baylor in the night cap.GW (6-2) hit .394 and committed just 10 attack errors in Friday morning's 3-0 sweep of Columbia. Set scores were 25-21, 25-19, 25-20.
The Colonials opened the first set on a 6-2 run but Columbia (3-2) rallied with a 9-4 run of their own to take a brief lead at 11-10. GW responded by scoring six of the next seven points to open a 16-12 lead and force a Columbia timeout. Out of the break, the Colonials remained in control en route to a 25-21 victory.
GW swung a blistering .400 in the first set with just two attack errors and a balanced offense as five players recorded at least two kills.
GW's hot hitting continued into the second set as the team hit .303 with just four attack errors. The second set was a battle as the teams traded the lead six times through 13 tie scores. The last tie came at 18-18 before GW ended the set on a 7-1 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-19 win.
The Colonials got off to a slow start in the third set, trailing 8-12 in the early moments before a timeout was taken to halt the momentum. Out of the stoppage, the Colonials erupted on a 14-4 run to take a 22-16 lead and force a Lions timeout. GW extended its match-ending run to 17-8 to clinch the match with a 25-20 victory.
The Colonials hit a match-best .484 (19k-4e-31a) in the third set while senior Kelsey Newman recorded nine errorless kills.
For the match, Newman finished with a match- and season-high 18 kills against three errors (.395) with eight digs.
Sophomore Chidima Osuchukwu added 13 kills on a .526 attack percentage with four block assists and junior Jordan Timmer tallied a double-double with 40 assists and 11 digs along with five blocks (one solo, four assists) and three kills.
Baylor (6-2) outlasted GW, 3-0, in the nightcap. Set scores were 28-30, 23-25, 23-25.
GW outhit the Bears, .400-.295 in the first set but was unable to complete a late comeback as Baylor prevailed, 28-30.
The Colonials trailed 15-19 late in the set but used a 6-2 run to pull within one point of the lead at 21-22. From that point forward, the teams were tied at six different points with Baylor serving for the set on five occasions but the Colonials refused to fold until back-to-back kills by the Bears clinched a 30-28 win.
GW faced an early 9-14 deficit in the second set but once again rallied to tie the match at 15-15. From there, Baylor opened up a four point lead at 21-17 but GW rallied with three straight points to get within two points at 20-22.
After a Baylor timeout, the Colonials got to within one point of the lead at 23-24 but Baylor was able to escape the threat and take a 2-0 lead in the match with the 25-23 win.
The teams battled through eight tie scores in the third set but GW was never able to gain the upper hand and fell, 23-25, for the first time at home this season.
Newman led GW with 10 kills and six digs while Osuchukwu and Garvik each put down eight winners.
Junior Maggie Skejelbred totaled four block assists, two aces and six kills while Timmer narrowly missed her second straight double-double, finishing with 34 assists and nine digs in addition to three block assists.
GW concludes play in the Colonials Challenge on Saturday afternoon against Illinois State at Smith Center. First serve is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
