WASHINGTON - George Washington lacrosse opens the 2014 season on Wednesday when the squad welcomes crosstown foe Howard to the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus for a 3:30 p.m. game.
GW looks to open the season with a victory over Howard for the fourth straight year after the Colonials downed the Bison, 22-7, in 2013. Juniors Rachel Mia and Jamie Bumgardner tied single-game scoring records against the district foe as Mia tallied a career-high seven goals and Bumgardner dished out a career-best five assists.
Under the direction of seventh-year Head Coach Tara Hannaford, the Buff and Blue return 19 letterwinners from last season's team that went 9-8 overall and 4-3 in Atlantic 10 play. GW lost just four players to graduation last spring and returns four all-conference selections - Bumgardner, junior Jenn Seitz and sophomores Olivia Boudreau and Julia Lawson. The Colonials also welcome back six of its top seven scorers from a year ago in Bumgardner (18 g, 39), junior Rachel Mia (31 g, 2 a), senior Jordy Bathras (19 g, 7 a), junior Allie Rash (12 g, 11 a), Boudreau (15 g, 7 a) and senior Lindsey DiAntonio (15 g, 2 a) for a well-rounded attack.
Wednesday's contest will also serve as the season opener for Howard, which is coming off a 1-16 season. Cynthia Smalls (50 g, 5 a) and Jaymie Cox (29 g, 2 a) highlight the squad's returning leading scorers while goalkeeper Candace Ross, who tallied 158 saves and an 18.62 goals-against average, will return between the pipes.
GW is 6-0 all-time against Howard and has out-scored the Bison, 124-35, combined in six outings.
