2015 GW Lacrosse Schedule
WASHINGTON - The George Washington lacrosse team will play three teams which advanced to the 2014 NCAA Tournament as part of its 17-match 2015 regular-season schedule, first-year head coach Tracy Coyne announced.
GW opens its 2015 campaign on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at regional rival Johns Hopkins, which earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament last spring and ended the season ranked in the top 15 in both national polls.
The Colonials play their first of eight home games at the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus on Saturday, Feb. 21, when they host Yale for the first time ever. GW will then visit Liberty on Feb. 25 in a rematch of last season's 21-10 victory before returning home to face another regional foe in Navy, which went 14-3 in 2014.
The Colonials will spend spring break on the West Coast for their inaugural meetings with 2014 NCAA Tournament participant Stanford (March 5) and Oregon (March 10).
GW will look for its fifth straight win over Mount St. Mary's when the Mountaineers visit the District on March 17; the Colonials defeated the Mount, 18-8, last season. GW then visits Delaware on March 21 for another rematch with a 2014 opponent before concluding non-conference play at home against California on March 23 for the teams' first meeting since 2008.
"There is a lot of excitement surrounding the 2015 season," said Coach Coyne. "We will play a very challenging schedule in the spring - one that will force us to bring our best game against every opponent. Playing strong opponents like Stanford, Hopkins, Delaware and Yale will be great preparation for the A-10 schedule."
GW opens Atlantic 10 Conference play at league newcomer Davidson on Friday, March 27. The Colonials are 6-0 all-time against the 2014 Big South runner-up, including an 8-7 victory last season.
GW then visits 2014 A-10 Championship qualifier La Salle on March 29 before returning to D.C. for four straight home games against Saint Joseph's (April 3), A-10 Championship runner-up Richmond (April 10), conference tournament qualifier Duquesne (April 17) and St. Bonaventure (April 19).
The Colonials conclude the regular season with a pair of road games at Revolutionary Rival George Mason (April 24) and six-time defending A-10 champion Massachusetts (April 26), which ended 2014 ranked in the top 20 in both national polls.
GW will host the 2015 Atlantic 10 Championship at the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus from May 1-3. It marks the second time that the league tournament will be played at GW.
"We are all energized and ready to start practicing in January," said Coach Coyne. "I was very pleased with the progress of the team in the fall. The players are very receptive to my coaching style and have demonstrated a renewed commitment to winning. We are very excited about hosting the A-10 Tournament, and we will be working all season with the goal in mind of playing on Championship Sunday at the Vern."
