WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's basketball team goes for its sixth straight win on Monday evening when Memphis visits the Charles E. Smith Center for the first time. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
At 7-2, GW is off to its best start in eight years, as the 2006-07 Colonials opened the season with an identical 7-2 record. That team won 19 straight games en route to an Atlantic 10 regular-season championship and its first of two straight Sweet 16 appearances.
The Colonials downed District rival Georgetown, 72-60, on Tuesday evening at the Smith Center behind sophomore Hannah Schaible's first double-double of the season. She tallied 17 points and 10 rebounds, while junior Jonquel Jones scored all of her 15 points in the second half and added nine rebounds. Sophomore Shannon Cranshaw chipped in 12 points on a career-best four three-pointers.
On Wednesday Jones was named one of 50 preseason candidates for the Naismith Trophy, given annually to the men's and women's college basketball players of the year. She is averaging a double-double of 15.2 points and 10.0 rebounds per game, pacing an offense that ranks third in the A-10 with 75.3 points per game and leads the league in scoring margin (+13.1 ppg).
GW has outrebounded its opponents in all nine games this season and ranks fifth in the nation in rebounding margin (+15.2 rpg). Sophomore Caira Washington is tied for second in the A-10 with 8.3 boards per game, while freshman Kelli Prange is sixth with 7.9.
Monday's game will mark the first-ever meeting between GW and Memphis. Following a four-game skid, the Tigers (5-4) have won three in a row, including their first road victory of the season, 63-46, on Saturday at Georgetown. Four players scored in double figures against the Hoyas, led by 12 points from Breigha Wilder-Cochran.
Ariel Hearn is the fifth-leading scorer in the American Athletic Conference with 17.0 points per game, while Brianna Wright ranks third in rebounding with 9.8 boards per contest, including a league-best 4.0 offensive rebounds per game.
As a team, Memphis is averaging 65.2 points per game and allowing 61.6 points per contest. Under the direction of seventh-year head coach Melissa McFerrin, the Tigers were picked to finish sixth in the American preseason poll, while Hearn was selected to the Preseason All-Conference First Team after earning postseason honors in 2013-14.
