WASHINGTON - A GW sailor will compete in an Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) national championship for the first time in 60 years this weekend when sophomore Brendan Shanahan travels to Bellingham, Washington, for the ICSA Singlehanded Nationals.
Shanahan finished second at the Carl Van Duyne MAISA Men's Singlehanded Championship in early October to secure one of the four berths available in-conference and 18 available across the nation.
He'll be joined in the 18-boat fleet by competitors from schools around the country, including Charleston, Fordham, Georgetown, Oregon State, Roger Williams, Stanford, Texas A&M Galveston, Coast Guard, Navy, Wisconsin, Washington University and Yale.
Shanahan's bid marks the Colonials' first to an ICSA National Championship since 1954 when the then club program placed fifth in the coed competition. It also continues the upward trajectory of the third-year varsity program which garnered its first-ever national ranking at No. 20 in the coed ranks on Sept. 25 and improved to No. 17 on Oct. 23, the same day its new fleet of 18 boats were delivered to the Washington Sailing Marina.
"It's a real honor to have our team featured in college sailing nationals after 60 years, and Brendan is prepared to race hard against a top-notch field of competitors from around the country," said Head Coach John Pearce. "The forecast is for cool temperatures and light-to-medium wind conditions, and we are looking forward to getting to the venue early on Friday to get his boat ready and learn as much as we can about the local weather. It's a great opportunity for Brendan to compete in his first nationals as a sophomore, and I think he may turn some heads in his nationals debut."
