GW Volleyball Closes Home Schedule with Crucial A-10 Matches

WASHINGTON - The George Washington volleyball team will conclude its home schedule with a pair of crucial Atlantic 10 Conference matches this weekend at the Charles E. Smith Center. The Colonials will host VCU on Friday at 7:00 p.m. before welcoming A-10 newcomer Davidson on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
GW (17-7, 7-3 A-10) enters the weekend in third place in the Atlantic 10 standings. The top six teams will advance, with the top two teams earning first-round byes, to the Atlantic 10 Championship, Nov. 21-23, at the University of Dayton's Frericks Center.
VCU (14-11, 7-4 A-10) is in a three-way tie for fourth place in the conference standings along with Saint Louis (18-8, 7-4 A-10) and Rhode Island (16-8, 7-4 A-10). Dayton (23-5, 10-1 A-10) sits in first place with its only conference blemish being an Oct. 11 loss to the Colonials. Duquesne is in sole possession of second place with a 8-3 mark in conference play and a 15-9 overall record.
GW is coming off a 2-0 week last week during which it snapped American's 14-match win streak in a 3-2 victory last Wednesday evening. The Colonials then completed the season sweep by downing George Mason, 3-0, last Friday evening at the Smith Center.
The Colonials continue to lead the conference in assists per set (13.27, 15th in NCAA), blocks per set (2.74, 22nd in NCAA) and kills per set (14.21, 16th in NCAA) entering the weekend.
Sophomore Chidima Osuchukwu ranks sixth in NCAA Division I with 1.50 blocks per set and ranks 13th with 129 total blocks. She also leads GW and ranks third in the Atlantic 10 with 3.84 kills per set and 330 total kills.
Junior Jordan Timmer, who is tied for the team lead with nine double-doubles, ranks third in the A-10 and 32nd in the nation with 11.04 assists per set.
Senior Kelsey Newman, who also has posted nine double-doubles, is fourth in the A-10 with 3.70 kills per set and second on the team with 300 total kills.
VCU defeated the Colonials, 3-0, on October 19. The Rams are led by Kalah Jones (303 kills, 28 blocks), Janelle Sykes (275 kills, 118 blocks) and Jessica Young (226 kills).
Davidson (3-18, 1-10 A-10) has not won since a 3-2 win over Saint Louis on October 5. GW swept the Wildcats, 3-0, on October 17. Hannah Rau leads the team with 202 kills on the season while Emily Franklin is the top defender with a team-high 80 blocks on the season.
