WASHINGTON - The No. 2-seeded George Washington volleyball team will open play in the Atlantic 10 Championship when it faces No. 3 Saint Louis in Saturday's semifinals at 7:00 p.m. at the Frericks Center in Dayton, Ohio.
GW (21-7, 11-3 A-10) earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament and a first-round bye when it rallied for a 3-2 victory over Rhode Island last Sunday in Kingston, Rhode Island. With the win, GW ensured its best regular season since going 26-5 overall and 14-2 in the conference en route to the 2000 Atlantic 10 Championship.
The Colonials are 5-1 in five-set matches this season and 10-2 over the past two seasons. In four seasons under Head Coach Amanda Ault, GW is 19-7 when pushed to five sets.
GW, which has won six straight matches entering the tournament, is making its third appearance at the Atlantic 10 Championship in four seasons under Coach Ault. Last season, the Colonials defeated Rhode Island in the quarterfinals at the Charles E. Smith Center before bowing out to VCU in the semifinals.
The Colonials are 18-23 all-time in the A-10 Championship with conference titles in 1993, 1994, 1995 and 2000.
The Colonials enter the tournament leading the Atlantic 10 in assists (12.95/set), kills (13.87/set) and blocks (2.74/set) while ranking second in digs (15.36) and opponent hitting percentage (.163).
GW is 4-3 against the Atlantic 10 Championship field this season. The Colonials gave No. 1 seed Dayton (13-1) its only league loss in a 3-2 victory on October 11 at the Smith Center and are 2-0 against No. 4 Rhode Island (9-5). GW is 1-1 against No. 6 VCU (9-5) and 0-1 against both No. 3 Saint Louis (9-5) and No. 6 Duquesne (9-5) this season.
Rhode Island will face VCU in the first quarterfinal match on Friday at 4:30 p.m. followed by Saint Louis facing Duquesne at 7:00 p.m.
Dayton will play the winner of Rhode Island and VCU on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. while GW awaits the winner of Saint Louis and Duquesne in the second semifinal match at 7:00 p.m.
The Atlantic 10 Championship match will begin on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. The winner of the A-10 Championship will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
