GW Volleyball Wins Sixth Straight, 3-2, at URI

KINGSTON, R.I. - The George Washington volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to knock off Rhode Island, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at Keaney Gymnasium and clinch the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Championship. Set scores were 25-17, 13-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-8.
With the win, GW (21-7, 11-3 A-10) clinches its best overall and conference record since going 25-6 overall and 14-0 in the league en route to the 2000 Atlantic 10 title.
The match also marked GW's sixth win in a row and improved its record in five-set matches this season to 5-1 while clinching the regular-season sweep over Rhode Island (18-9, 9-5 A-10).
The Colonials opened the match with a staunch defensive effort, forcing 10 Rhode Island attack errors on the way to a 25-17 win in the first set.
The Rams responded by taking the next two sets to build a 2-1 lead in the match. URI led wire-to-wire in the second set on the way to a 25-13 victory and outlasted GW through five ties and three lead changes in a 25-23 third-set win.
Rhode Island took a 9-4 lead to start the fourth set before the Colonials used an 8-3 run to pull even at 12-12. A kill by senior Landon Garvik gave the Colonials a brief 13-12 lead, but three straight points by the Rams put them ahead, 15-13.
After trading points to make the score 16-14, the Colonials erupted on another 8-3 spurt to pull ahead 22-19. The Rams were able to tie the match at 23-23 but back-to-back kills by junior Maggie Skjelbred and freshman Aaliya Davidson clinched the set at 25-23 to force a decisive fifth frame.
GW opened the fifth set on a 4-1 run but Rhode Island battled back to tie the score at 5-5. With the score tied 6-6, the Colonials scored four straight points to open a 10-6 advantage and remained in front for the remainder of the set before clinching the match on consecutive kills by Davidson.
Davidson finished with 12 kills and a career-high five block assists, while sophomore Chidima Osuchukwu posted a match-high 17 kills along with three blocks (two solo, one assist). Senior Landon Garvik also posted double-digit kills with 10 winners in addition to five block assists and three digs.
Junior Jordan Timmer facilitated the attack with 38 assists in addition to nine digs, while junior Maddy Doyle anchored the back line with 23 digs.
GW clinches the No. 2 seed in the Atlantic 10 Championship and will await the winner of the quarterfinal match between No. 3 Saint Louis and No. 6 Duquesne in the semifinals. GW will play at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Dayton's Frericks Center.
Dayton clinched the regular-season championship and the No. 1 seed with a 13-1 A-10 record. The Flyers' only loss in conference play came against GW on Oct. 17. Dayton will play the winner of No. 4 Rhode Island and No. 5 VCU on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
