GW Volleyball Tops Mason, 3-1, in #RevRivalry Match

FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Washington volleyball team won its third straight match and earned a point in the Revolutionary Rivalry standings with a 3-1 victory over George Mason on Friday evening at Mason's Recreation & Athletics Center. Set scores were 25-13, 23-25, 25-16, 25-22.
GW (12-4, 3-0 A-10) moves to a perfect 3-0 in the Atlantic 10 for the first time since 2003 and has now won six of its last seven matches dating back to September 16. The Colonials have also won the last seven matches against George Mason, while improving its all-time advantage over the Patriots to 33-8.
Sophomore Chidima Osuchukwu led all players with a career-high 19 kills, swinging .469 with just four attack errors, and added seven blocks (two solo, five assists).
The Colonials swung .370 (14k-4e-27a) in the first set, limiting George Mason (5-11, 1-2 A-10) to just four kills while forcing nine attack errors, en route to a 25-13 victory. GW led wire-to-wire and closed the set on a 9-3 run after holing a 16-10 lead midway through the frame.
George Mason evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-23 win in the second set. The Colonials trailed 19-21 and rallied to tie the score at 22-22, but Mason tallied three of the next four points to clinch the win.
GW's offense responded in the third set, swinging .300 (13k-4e-30a) on the way to a 25-16 win. The Colonials trailed early in the frame by a score of 9-11 but responded with a set-closing 16-7 run to regain the lead at 2-1.
The Colonials again faced an early deficit in the fourth set before responding to win the frame. Mason opened the set on a 7-5 run but the Colonials answered by tying the score at 9-9. From there, the teams traded points until the Patriots gained a one-point advantage at 14-13. The Colonials responded by scoring five points in a row to open a 18-14 lead. The Patriots were able to battle back and take a brief one-point lead at 22-21 but GW scored the final four points of the set to clinch the match with a 25-22 victory.
Junior Jordan Timmer dished out 44 assists to facilitate the Colonials' attack while freshman Aaliya Davidson, junior Maggie Skjelbred and senior Kelsey Newman each tallied nine kills apiece.
Skjelbred's nine winners came against just one attack error for a .500 attack percentage, while Davidson committed just two errors.
Freshman Christina Porada paced the defense with a season-high 18 digs and junior Maddy Doyle added 11 digs and two assists.
GW returns to action next Friday night with a match against Saint Louis at 7:00 p.m. at the Charles E. Smith Center. The Colonials will host Dayton the following evening with first serve scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
