GW Volleyball Knocks off American, 3-2

WASHINGTON - The George Washington volleyball team twice rallied from a one-set deficit to earn a 3-2 victory over American University on Wednesday evening at Bender Arena. Set scores were 21-25, 25-20, 13-25, 25-19, 15-13.
With the victory, GW (16-7) ended American's (18-5) 14-match win streak and improved its all-time record over the 2013 NCAA Sweet 16 participant to 12-6.
The Colonials had two players finish with double-digit kills while holding statistical advantages in service aces (6-3) and blocks (12.0-8.0).
The first set featured 12 ties and three lead changes before American pulled away for a 25-21 win. A 5-2 run midway through the set put GW ahead 15-12, forcing a timeout by AU, but the Eagles responded with 6-2 spurt to take 18-17 lead. Senior Kelsey Newman tied the score at 18-18 with a kill but the Eagles closed on a 7-3 run to claim the set and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
GW raced out to an 8-4 lead in the second set and never trailed en route to a 25-20 victory to tie the match at 1-1. The Colonials limited American to a .103 attack percentage and forced seven attack errors in the frame while converting on 76-percent (16-of-21) of sideout point opportunities. GW led by as many as five points midway through the set, but the Eagles were able to pull within two points of the lead at 20-18. GW responded by closing on a 5-2 run, punctuated by a kill and solo block by Newman, to clinch the set.
American built an 8-4 lead to open the third set and never trailed on the way to a 25-13 victory to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Colonials hit .333 in the fourth set with just four attack errors to force a decisive fifth frame. American led early at 8-7, but a 10-3 run put the Colonials ahead at 17-11. The Eagles pulled back within two at 18-16 but GW was able to stave off the rally and close on a 7-3 run to earn a 25-19 win and force the fifth set.
GW opened the fifth set by going up 4-2, but the Eagles rallied to tie the score at 5-5. The Colonials then turned an AU service error into a 4-0 run to move ahead 9-5 and force a timeout.
Out of the stoppage, GW was able to maintain at least a three-point advantage until the Eagles got within two points of the lead at 13-11. GW took a timeout and was able to close out the match with a 15-13 victory.
Sophomore Chidima Osuchukwu led all players with 18 kills in addition to five block assists while Newman also finished in double-digit kills with 16 winners, 12 digs and three block assists.
Freshman Aaliya Davidson added nine winners, four digs and two block assists and the duo of senior Landon Garvik and junior Maggie Skjelbred each added seven kills apiece.
Junior Jordan Timmer finished with 49 assists and 10 assists for her ninth double-double of the season and junior Maddy Doyle led all players with 20 digs along with two service aces.
GW resumes its Atlantic 10 schedule on Friday evening when it hosts George Mason for the second leg of its Revolutionary Rivalry series. First serve at the Charles E. Smith Center is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
