WASHINGTON - GW sailing will battle for a conference title and spot in next month's Atlantic Coast Championship at this weekend's War Memorial MAISA Coed Fall Championship hosted by SUNY Maritime in Long Island Sound.

A Division: Brendan Shanahan, Miranda Bakos
B Division: Roger Dorr, Belle Strachan
Alternates: Matthew Ricci, Kai Friesecke, Henry Young
No. 17 GW will be among eight teams in the 18-boat fleet that are either ranked or receiving votes in the Sailing World coed top 20 along with No. 3 Georgetown, No. 11 Navy, No. 13 Fordham, No. 14 St. Mary's, No. 18 Old Dominion, Hobart and William Smith, and SUNY Maritime.
After finishing 15th at the event during its debut season in 2012, the Colonials improved six spots to ninth at last year's War Memorial. A similar jump will have GW inside the top-seven finish needed to qualify for the Atlantic Coast Coed Championship - hosted by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, Nov. 15-16 - for the first time in program history. The War's Nos. 8-14 finishers will compete in the Atlantic Coast Tournament in Geneva, New York, Nov. 15-16.
"This year's War Memorial regatta is going to be a fantastic event," said Head Coach John Pearce. "The pecking order in MAISA has been shaken up so far this year and there is a deeper, more competitive field of teams than ever before. The teams that maintain their focus and adapt to the tricky wind and water conditions at SUNY Maritime will be the top finishers."
