GW Volleyball Sweeps La Salle to Open Weekend

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The George Washington volleyball team totaled 12.0 team blocks and forced 26 attack errors while using a balanced offensive attack on the way to a 3-0 sweep of La Salle on Friday night at Tom Gola Arena. Set scores were 25-16, 25-23, 25-10.
GW (15-6, 6-2 A-10) hit .311 in the match (39k-11e-90a) while holding La Salle (8-17, 1-7 A-10) to a negative attack percentage (21k-26e-98a).
After trading points to a 4-4 tie in the first set, the Colonials erupted on a 12-2 run to build a comfortable advantage at 16-6. The Explorers were able to pull within six points of the lead at 21-15, but the Colonials used a 4-1 spurt to clinch the first set with a 25-16 win.
The second set was the closest of match with the teams battling through six ties and four lead changes. GW raced out to a 6-2 lead before falling behind midway through the frame. Trailing 12-10, a kill by junior Maggie Skjelbred ignited a 7-2 run to put the Colonials ahead 17-14, but La Salle fought back to tie the score at 18-18.
GW pulled ahead once again to build a 22-19 lead, but La Salle retaliated by pulling even at 23-23. An attack error followed by a kill from freshman Aaliya Davidson put the Colonials ahead 2-0 in the match.
The Colonials seized all of the momentum in the third set, scoring 17 of the first 20 points in the frame to build a 17-3 lead en route to a 25-10 victory to clinch the sweep. GW committed just four attack errors in the third set while holding La Salle to a -.207 attack percentage.
Sophomore Chidima Osuchukwu swung .571 in the match to lead all players with 10 kills. She added six blocks (one solo, five assists) and a service ace.
Davidson added nine kills on a .318 attack percentage with five digs and two blocks (one solo, one assists).
Senior Kelsey Newman and junior Maggie Skjelbred finished with eight kills apiece. Newman added 11 digs and two block assists while Skjelbred hit .571 with no errors and five block assists.
Junior Jordan Timmer tallied 15 assists and two block assists while junior Maddy Doyle added a match-high 14 digs.
GW travels across Pennsylvania to take on Duquesne on Sunday afternoon in Pittsburgh. First serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
