GW Volleyball Opens Road Trip At Davidson, VCU This Weekend

WASHINGTON - The George Washington volleyball team will open a five-match road trip when it visits Atlantic 10 newcomer Davidson (Fri., 7 p.m.) and VCU (Sun., 1 p.m.) this weekend.
Sophomore Chidima Osuchukwu, who put down a career-best and A-10 season-high 30 kills against Dayton, earned her third Atlantic 10 Player of the Week Award of the season on Monday. The Virginia Beach, Virginia, native totaled 45 kills on a .429 attack percentage with 12.0 total blocks (three solo, nine assists) to lead the Colonials to a 1-1 weekend.
Osuchukwu currently leads the Atlantic 10 and ranks 11th in NCAA Division I with 1.47 blocks per set and 19th in the nation with 94 total blocks. She also leads GW with 246 total kills while ranking third in the A-10 in both attack percentage (.375) and kills per set (3.84).
Junior Maddy Doyle was also honored by the conference this week for the first time in her career as she was named the Co-Defensive Player of the Week. Doyle provided 4.67 digs per set through the two matches last weekend. Doyle currently leads the Atlantic 10 with 4.44 digs per set and is third with 284 total digs.
GW continues to lead the Atlantic 10 and hold a number of top-20 national stat rankings entering the weekend. The Colonials currently pace the A-10 and rank 16th in NCAA Division I with 14.23 kills per set, 19th in the nation with 13.20 assists per set and 20th with 2.75 blocks per set. Additionally, GW ranks 59th in the nation with 16.03 digs per set.
Junior Jordan Timmer enters the weekend ranked second in the A-10 and 33rd in the nation with 11.00 assists per set. Also garnering top-five rankings within the Atlantic 10 are junior Maggie Skjelbred (5th, 1.08 blocks/set) and senior Kelsey Newman (4th, 3.71 kills/set).
GW leads the all-time series with VCU, 17-7, and fell in its only meeting against Davidson in 2006.
Davidson, in its first season as a member of the Atlantic 10, is 3-12 overall and 1-4 in the Atlantic 10 with a victory over Saint Louis. The Wildcats dropped a pair of matches to La Salle and Duquesne last weekend and are led by Hannah Rau, who has registered a team-high 153 kills this season.
VCU carries a 10-9 overall record into this weekend's matches with a 3-2 mark in the Atlantic 10. The Rams, who will host George Mason on Friday night, have recorded conference victories over Saint Louis, Davidson and La Salle this season. Most recently, VCU defeated Hampton, 3-2, in a non-conference match on Tuesday night. The Rams are led by Janelle Sykes (212 kills, .339, 87 blocks), Kalah Jones (221 kills) and Jessica Young (170 kills, 21 blocks).
