GW Volleyball Rallies Past Dayton, 3-2

WASHINGTON - Sophomore Chidima Osuchukwu recorded a career-high 30 kills to lead the George Washington volleyball team to a 3-2 comeback win over Atlantic 10 rival Dayton on Saturday evening at the Charles E. Smith Center. Set scores were 25-22, 19-25, 23-25, 27-25, 15-9.
GW (13-5, 4-1 A-10) rallied from a 2-1 deficit to hand Dayton (16-5, 5-1 A-10) its first conference loss.
Osuchukwu led all players with an astounding 30 kills against just three attack errors for a .474 hitting percentage.
The Colonials swung .349 (19k-4e-43a) in the first set en route to a 25-22 victory. The Flyers led 13-7 before a kill by senior Landon Garvik ignited an 8-1 GW run that gave the Colonials a 15-14 lead. The teams traded the next four points, but a kill by senior Kelsey Newman put GW on top for good, 17-16, as the Colonials scored seven of the next nine points. Newman had 10 kills in the first set.
Dayton evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-19 win in the second set. The Colonials led, 5-3, but the Flyers scored 11 straight points to take a commanding 14-5 lead. GW used a 5-1 run to pull within four, 20-16, but could get no closer.
The third set saw 10 ties and six lead changes but Dayton eventually came away with the 25-23 win. The Flyers jumped out to an 8-3 lead before a 7-2 GW spurt knotted the score at 12-12. Neither team led by more than one until two straight points by Dayton gave the visitors a 22-20 advantage which they did not relinquish. Osuchukwu swung .500 on seven kills without an error in the set.
Another back-and-forth set in the fourth frame included 16 ties and seven lead changes as neither team led by more than three points the entire set. The Flyers led, 25-24, but a kill by junior Maggie Skjelbred evened the score at 25-25, and back-to-back blocks by Newman gave the Colonials the 27-25 victory. Osuchukwu had nine kills against one attack error in the set.
GW dominated the fifth set, limiting Dayton to just four kills and a -.091 hitting percentage. With the score tied, 4-4, the Colonials rattled off four straight points to take an 8-4 lead. The Flyers pulled within two, 9-7, but GW closed the set with a 6-2 run to clinch the match with a 15-9 victory.
Junior Jordan Timmer dished out a career-high 57 assists to go with 10 digs for her seventh double-double of the season. Newman also posted a double-double with 19 kills and 16 digs. Garvik added nine kills without an error for a .529 attack percentage, while junior Maddy Doyle paced the defense with 26 digs and added four assists.
The Colonials return to action on Friday when they visit Atlantic 10 newcomer Davidson at 7 p.m.
