WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's basketball team visits Atlantic 10 rival Massachusetts on Wednesday for an 11:45 a.m. tipoff from the Mullins Center.
GW (13-7, 4-3 A-10) is 2-1 in three league road games this season with wins at Saint Joseph's and George Mason.
The Colonials rank third in the A-10 in both scoring (76.3 ppg) and rebounding (43.2 rpg). Four players are averaging at least 10 points per game, led by grad student Megan Nipe, who ranks fifth in the A-10 with 15.7 points per contest. GW boasts the highest-producing frontcourt in conference games, as sophomore Jonquel Jones and freshman Caira Washington, who rank first and third in the category, have combined for 19.0 boards per contest against league opponents.
GW is 35-10 all-time against Massachusetts, including 12-10 at Mullins Center, in a series that dates to 1984. Grad student Danni Jackson has averaged 12.0 points and 4.7 assists in three career games against the Minutewomen, including 14 points and five helpers in last season's contest in Amherst.
Massachusetts (3-18, 0-7 A-10) has lost 11 in a row dating to Dec. 19. Most recently, the Minutewomen dropped an 80-54 decision at Fordham on Saturday. Kim Pierre-Louis led UMass with 17 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
Pierre-Louis paces the Minutewomen with 13.0 points per game, the only UMass player averaging in double figures, including 15.1 points per game against A-10 opponents. She ranks sixth in the A-10 in field goal percentage at .498. Rashida Timbila is UMass' top rebounder with 6.8 boards per contest, and she is also tops on the team with 2.8 assists per game.
UMass is averaging 60.0 points per game on the season and has been outscored by 18.4 points per contest, allowing a league-high 78.4 points per game. The Minutewomen rank last in the A-10 in field goal percentage defense (.440), three-point percentage (.266) and three-point defense (.356).
GW returns home to host A-10 rival Rhode Island (6-14, 1-6 A-10) on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Charles E. Smith Center.
