TOWSON, Md. - George Washington women's tennis opens its 2013-14 campaign this weekend with the first of four invitationals scheduled for this fall as it heads to nearby Towson, Md., for the annual Tiger Classic from Friday, Sept. 6 - Sunday, Sept. 8 at the Towson Center Tennis Courts.
The three-day tournament is comprised of several schools from the ITA Mid-Atlantic Region, including Atlantic 10 newcomer George Mason, Mount St. Mary's, Delaware, NCAA Division II Indiana (Pa.), conference foe Saint Joseph's and host Towson. This weekend marks the first round of fall competition for each team.
The Buff and Blue open action on Friday with a 1 p.m. match against the host Tigers, then face Delaware at 4 p.m. On Saturday GW plays IUP at 9 a.m. before facing George Mason at noon. The Colonials wrap the invitational on Sunday with a 9 a.m. match against Saint Joseph's before taking on IUP for the second time at 11 a.m.
GW went 2-1 at last season's rain-shortened Tiger Classic, defeating Howard and Saint Joseph's before being edged by Delaware.
The Colonials return six players from last season's roster and welcome four newcomers. During the 2012-13 season GW reached the A-10 Championship quarterfinal match for the fourth straight year while amassing an overall record of 11-8.
