GW Volleyball Drops 3-0 Decision to IPFW

DeKalb, Ill. - Junior Kelsey Newman hit .478 with 14 kills but it was not enough as the George Washington volleyball team fell to IPFW, 3-0, on Saturday in the final match of the Huskie Invitational. Set scores were 17-25, 14-25, 23-25.
GW (5-8) fell behind 1-0 in the match after IPFW (7-8) hit .424 with just three attack errors in the opening set. The Colonials hit .200 (11k-5e-30a) and were unable to keep pace with the Mastadons. IPFW jumped out to an early 4-1 lead that was extended to 16-10 before winning 25-17.
IPFW continued its hot hitting in the second set, swinging .435 (12k-2e-23a) on the way to a 25-11 win.
The third set was the closest of the match, featuring three ties and two lead changes before IPFW clinched the sweep with a 25-23 win. The Colonials trailed 16-11 midway through the frame but used a 10-5 run to get within one point of the lead at 22-21. However, the Mastadons regained the momentum and closed out the match.
Newman added six digs to her 14 winners while freshman Chidima Osuchukwu posted six kills and three blocks. For the weekend, Osuchukwu hit .286 with 34 kills and nine blocks (three solo, six assist).
GW concludes its non-conference schedule next Sunday when it hosts Towson for Alumni Day at the Charles E. Smith Center. Match time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
