WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team continues its 14-game homestand on Wednesday when it welcomes Ohio State to the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus for the first-ever meeting between the two teams. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
GW (6-11) broke out of its offensive slump with a 3-1 weekend against Mount St. Mary's and Seton Hall. The Colonials batted .347 as a team and outscored their opponents, 27-8, over the four games, with 11 of their 33 hits going for extra-bases.
Sophomore shortstop Victoria Valos hit .615 (8-for-13) with three doubles, six RBIs and five runs scored, while senior center fielder Autumn Taylor batted .500 (6-for-12) and slugged 1.250 with three home runs and nine RBIs. She matched the school record with two homers and six runs driven in against Mount St. Mary's. Junior Courtney Martin struck out 23 batters in 15.0 innings of work, including a career-high 11 in the first game against the Mount.
Freshman first baseman Carlee Gray leads GW with a .367 average this season, and Valos is hitting .321 with team-bests of five doubles, 16 RBIs and 11 runs scored. Martin boasts a 1.80 ERA with 58 strikeouts against just 12 walks, and freshman Meghan Rico has allowed just 28 hits in 51.0 innings of work, holding opponents to a .164 average.
With her three home runs over the weekend, Taylor passed former teammate Lauren Wilson ('12) for second place all-time at GW with 19 career long balls, seven behind all-time leader Jackie Yaniga ('08). Taylor has also moved into a tie with Chrysanthi Halkiotis ('08) for second place with 71 career RBIs, 20 behind Yaniga's school-record 91.
Ohio State (12-7) went 3-1 at last weekend's Miken Invitational hosted by the University of Maryland. The Buckeyes defeated St. John's, Radford and the host Terps, and fell to Iowa. Outfielder Taylor Watkins paces Ohio State with a .397 average, four home runs, 18 RBIs, 18 runs scored and seven stolen bases on the season, and first baseman Leesa Gresham is batting .373 and slugging .667 with six doubles, three homers and 13 RBIs. Alex DiDomenico boasts a 5-1 record and a 1.21 ERA with three shutouts in 46.1 innings of work in the circle. The Buckeyes are batting .293 as a team and have outscored their opponents, 106-69, on the year.
Following Wednesday's game, the Colonials will host the Capital Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at the GW Softball Field. Akron, Drexel and St. John's will take part in the two-day tournament.
