WASHINGTON - GW sailing will compete in the premier Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) event of the fall season - the War Memorial MAISA Coed Fall Championship - this weekend in Norfolk, Va.
GW is among an 18-team field that includes seven of the nation's top 20 programs in No. 3 Georgetown, No. 10 St. Mary's (Md.), No. 12 Navy, host and 13th-ranked Old Dominion, No. 14 Fordham, No. 17 SUNY Maritime and No. 18 Hobart and William Smith. The Colonials qualified for the War by virtue of their third-place showing at the MAISA South Fall #1 on Oct. 6, and will seek to better last season's 15th-place finish.
"The competition in MAISA is very tight this year so it will be a good test for us," said second-year Head Coach John Pearce. "We are focused on taking it one race at a time and making the high percentage moves. I'm very excited to see what we can do!"
The Colonials will send five sailors to navigate the forecasted light-to-medium winds on Saturday and heavy winds on Sunday. Freshman Brendan Shanahan and junior Matthew Ricci will race in A Division, while freshmen Daniel DelBello and Gabriella Malek will sail in B Division, with sophomore Henry Young as an alternate crew for windy conditions.
The top eight teams advance to the Atlantic Coast Championships in Charleston, S.C., on Nov. 16-17.
