GW Golf Heads to NCAA Tournament Greensboro Regional

"We are heading into the tournament knowing that we are capable of being the best," fourth-year head coach Terry Shaffer ('79) said. "If we continue to play at the level we achieved at the conference championship, we will steadily improve as a whole. I believe in the players and I know we are up to the task of competing this week. We are here with a purpose and a job to do."
The Colonials will compete in their first NCAA regional since the 2006 season after claiming their first-ever Atlantic 10 Championship on April 29. At the league championship, GW set a new 36-hole program record after carding a two-round score of 8-under par 568 and unseated six-time defending champion and second-place finisher Charlotte by two strokes to earn the automatic bid to the NCAA regional.

Following a fifth-place finish at the 2006 A-10 Championship, GW received an at-large bid to compete in the East Regional of the NCAA Tournament. The Colonials finished 23rd under head coach Scott Allen ('93) with a 54-hole score of 922 at the Lake Nona Golf & Country Club in
The Buff and Blue will compete with Auburn, UNLV, Florida, Duke, Indiana, Liberty, SMU, Texas Tech, Tulsa, Lamar, Lousiana-Lafayette, Mount St. Mary's and Atlantic 10 rival Charlotte, in addition to individuals Vaita Guillaume (Campbell), Sam Ryder (Stetson), Chris Russo (Cal State Northridge), Casey O'Toole (Samford) and Leo Garcia (Sacred Heart).
Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals (Athens, Ga., Ann Arbor, Mich., Stanford, Calif.) while the other three regionals (Greensboro, N.C., Bowling Green, Ky., Norman, Okla.) will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The top 30 teams and six individuals advance to the NCAA Championship, held May 28 - June 3 at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
