GW Softball Handles Hampton in Doubleheader Sweep

The Colonials (9-16) blanked the visitors, 3-0, in Game 1 for their fourth shutout of the season, and went on to defeat the Lady Pirates, 3-2, in Game 2 to complete the sweep.
Freshman Victoria Valos led the Colonials at the plate, as she hit 3-for-5 with two runs, a homer and two RBIs. Senior Lauren Wilson went 3-for-5 with three runs, while sophomore Chelsea Lenhart went 2-for-5 with one run and two RBIs.
In the first contest, GW tallied three runs in the bottom of the first inning and added two in the bottom of the fifth to secure the shutout.
In the bottom of the fifth, senior Amanda Zakeri hit a leadoff double over the head of the third baseman, followed by a
Senior Kara Clauss (6-10) earned her fourth shutout of the season after allowing just five hits while walking none. Travonna Byrd suffered the loss for the Lady Pirates, as she allowed five runs on seven hits and walked four.
In Game 2,
The Buff and Blue took a 1-0 lead through two innings after Valos, who had doubled to center field to lead off the inning, scored on a throwing error by the catcher. The score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth, when
Freshman Chelsey Pedley picked up her first career victory from the mound after pitching her first complete game. She struck out five batters and allowed two runs on seven hits.
