GW Gymnastics Falters at No. 12 Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The George Washington gymnastics team competed in the first of six consecutive road meets on Saturday afternoon, falling to No. 12 Ohio State in a dual meet at St. John Arena.
Numerous gymnasts improved their individual scores from last weekend's season opener on Saturday afternoon but the No. 12 Buckeyes tallied 48.775 or better on all four events to knock off the visiting Colonials, 195.900-188.900.
Freshman Elena Corcoran was one of three Colonial gymnasts to improve her vault score from last week, posting a 9.700 on Saturday to place sixth overall. As a team, GW scored 47.550 on the event compared to 49.100 for the homestanding Buckeyes.
GW's best event of the afternoon was the floor exercise where they scored 47.725 as a team, led by junior Stephanie Stoicovy's 9.750. Freshman Courtney Willoughby finished second on the team and improved her score from last week with a 9.675.
For the second straight week both Stoicovy and Willoughby earned a place on the podium for the all-around. Stoicovy took second place with 38.800 and Willoughby finished third with a 37.425. Ohio State's Colleen Dean was crowned champion with a 39.300.
Sophomore Betsy Zander finished fifth overall on the balance beam with a 9.675
The Colonials continue their six meet, 4,000+ mile road swing with a visit to Morgantown, W.Va., to face East Atlantic Gymnastics League foe West Virginia on Jan. 29.
