GW Volleyball Stumbles at Saint Louis, 3-0

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Junior Lauren Whyte finished with a team-high 11 kills and seven digs for 11.5 points but could not lead the George Washington volleyball team past Saint Louis Sunday afternoon at Chaifetz Pavilion as the Colonials fell to the Billikens, 3-0. Set scores were 20-25, 24-26, 14-25.
GW (10-5, 0-2 A-10) was led by Whyte and freshman Christy Harper, who finished with five kills and six block assists. Sophomore Rachael Goss contributed seven kills and sophomore Taylor Knox added five kills with four block assists.
Defensively, junior libero Candace Silva-Martin and freshman Savannah Clark each tallied double-digit digs with 13 and 10, respectively.
The Colonials got off to a slow start and dropped the first set 20-25. Saint Louis (6-6, 2-0 A-10) opened the match hitting .393 compared to GW's .139 attack percentage. The Bilikens also converted on 75 percent (15-for-25) of sideout point opportunities.
GW played better in the second set, holding Saint Louis to a .089 attack percentage, but failed to clinch the set after serving for set point at 24-21. The Billikens rallied off five consecutive points to stun the Colonials and take a decisive 2-0 lead. Despite the inspired defensive play, GW hit .000 in the frame and was plagued by 11 attack errors.
The Colonials were unable to rally in the third set as they hit -.089 allowing Saint Louis to clinch the straight-sets victory. The Billikens were led by Andrea Betty with 13 kills and Carly Schumaker who finished with six of the Bilikens' nine team blocks.
GW will take a break from A-10 play when it visits Loyola (Md.) Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Colonials will return home on Saturday, Oct. 1, hosting Charlotte at the Charles E. Smith Center at 7 p.m.
