GW Volleyball Drops Two at San Diego Invitational

SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The George Washington volleyball team concluded play at the San Diego Invitational at Jenny Craig Pavilion on Saturday evening, dropping matches to No. 17 San Diego (3-0) and UC Santa Barbara (3-0).
In the first match of the day, the Colonials fell to nationally ranked No. 17 San Diego in straight sets, 25-9, 25-13, 25-15.
Junior Lauren Whyte led the Colonials' offense with six kills while junior Katie Crosby tallied 17 assists, but it was not enough as the Toreros won their twelfth consecutive match to open the season.
Sophomore Jamie Armstrong committed just one error while recording four kills in 11 attempts for a .273 attack percentage and junior Candace Silva-Martin paced the defense with a team-high nine digs.
The Colonials struggled throughout the match hitting .000 while the Toreros swung .375. San Diego had two players finish with double-digit kills as Amber Tatsch finished with 14 and Chloe Ferrari contributed 10.
In the nightcap, the Colonials were swept by UC Santa Barbara, 20-25, 23-25, 15-25.
Freshman Kelsey Newman paced the Colonials offense with 10 kills while White contributed nine kills to go along with five digs and two service aces.
The first set featured 11 ties and three lead changes but the Colonials hit just .036 while allowing the Gauchos to covert on 50 percent (10-for-20) of sideout point opportunities.
The Colonials played much better in the second half, hitting .297 but still were unable to overcome UC Santa Barbara's attack as the Gauchos swung .343 in the frame. Newman tallied five of her 10 kills and freshman Christy Harper contributed four. For the , Harper hit an errorless .889 on nine attempts with eight kills.
Santa Barbara continued their strong offense in the final set, racing out to a 10-4 lead before clinching the match with a 25-15 victory.
GW volleyball returns to action when the team opens Atlantic 10 Conference play on Friday, Sept. 23, at Duquesne at 7 p.m.
