GW Volleyball Improves to 3-0 with Sweep of Howard

WASHINGTON - Junior Lauren Whyte led all players with 12 kills and 14.5 points as the George Washington volleyball team swept visiting Howard, 3-0, on Tuesday night at the Charles E. Smith Center. The set scores were 25-15, 25-11, 25-19.
GW (3-0) used a furious defensive pace to hold Howard (0-5) to a .052 hitting percentage for the match while forcing 17 Bison errors. The Colonials also tallied 35 digs and four team blocks.
Whyte finished with 12 kills against just three errors for a .375 attack percentage. She also contributed four digs and one block as the Colonials recorded their third consecutive victory over a District rival following weekend victories over American and George Mason. Whyte has paced GW in kills in each of the three victories.
The win marked the collegiate debut for three freshmen as Kelsey Newman, Landon Garvik and Jessie Kupcha all made their first appearances for the Buff and Blue. Newman contributed eight kills on 12 attempts with no errors for eight points while Garvik registered one kill, one block and one service ace.
The Colonials relied on a steady offense to stay unbeaten on the season, hitting .284 for the match with eight service aces while committing just 13 errors.
Junior Candace Silva-Martin led all players with 11 digs and two service aces, and junior Katie Crosby added a match-high 27 assists along with five digs, one ace and one kill. Freshman Christy Harper pitched in four kills.
The Colonials will host the George Washington Invitational - featuring UNC Wilmington, North Carolina Central and Central Connecticut State - Sept. 2-3 at the Charles E. Smith Center. GW will face all three teams over the course of the tournament, starting with a match against UNC Wilmington on Friday night at 7:00 pm.
GW will celebrate College Colors Day on Friday and fans are encouraged to wear Buff and Blue throughout the day and to that evening's contest. There will be giveaways and free food from local vendors like Pinkberry and Kababji Grill before the match and the first 200 fans will receive free GW wristbands.
