WASHINGTON, DC- George Washington gymnastics head coach Margie Foster-Cunningham has announced the election of Monique Blount, Brittany Burnham and Amanda Murphy as team captains for the 2011-12 school year.
Murphy, a 2009 All-EAGL Second Team selection, has appeared in every regular season meet during her career. The Woodlands, TX native served as an assistant captain this past season. In 2011, she recorded 11 routines of 9.7 or better this past season including a 9.8 on the vault against Maryland, which stands as the highest vault score among the Colonials returning gymnasts.
Burnham has been voted a captain for the second season in a row. The Oak Hill, VA native enters her senior season as a three-time EAGL All-Academic team selection and has started in every regular-season meet for the Colonials the past two seasons. She specializes in the balance beam and uneven bars where she owns career-high scores of 9.725 and 9.475, respectively.
Blount, a native of Washington DC who grew up in Canberra, Australia, battled back from two injury plagued seasons to qualify for the NCAA Athens Regional this past season. The balance beam specialist registered a 9.775 on three separate occasions during the 2011 season.
The Colonials will return 13 gymnasts for the 2012 season.
