WASHINGTON, DC - Junior Megan Seidman's team-leading fourth goal brought George Washington women's lacrosse within a goal, 9-8, with 17:52 remaining, but Atlantic 10 rival Richmond closed on a 9-2 run to defeat the Colonials, 18-10, in their regular-season finale at rain-soaked Mount Vernon Field Friday afternoon.
GW, which was eliminated from Atlantic 10 Championship contention with Duquesne's victory at St. Bonaventure on Thursday, finishes the 2011 season 6-11 overall and 3-4 in the A-10.
A low scoring opening 25 minutes saw the teams knotted at 3-3 despite an early two-goal lead for the Colonials. UR added three goals between the 3:14 and 1:34 marks of the first half to grab a 6-3 lead before senior Mia Breheny's goal with 49 seconds before the break got GW within 6-4 at halftime.
Richmond took an 8-4 lead with 27:23 left as Mary Flowers and Danielle Schaevitz tallied 10 seconds apart, but a 4-1 run by GW over the next 10 minutes got the hosts within 9-8 with 17:52 remaining.
The Spiders scored four unanswered and, after sophomore Hannah McLaughlin tallied her two goals to make it 14-10, added four more in the final 5:45 for the 18-10 final margin.
Seidman's four goals gave her a team-leading 36 for the season. Sophomore Nicole Lacey added a goal and three assists and added three draws to increase her single-season program-record total to 62 this spring.
Richmond (9-8, 6-1 A-10), which will be the No. 2 seed for next weekend's A-10 Championship, was paced by Gabi Wiegand's five goals and two assists, Mary Flowers' three goals and three assists, and Danielle Schaevitz's hat trick and assist. Spiders' goalkeeper Victoria Roebuck made seven saves on 23 shots faced.
GW seniors Mia Breheny, Laura Dominiak, Liz Hoffman and Audrey Joy were honored in a pre-game ceremony. Breheny scored two goals to finish her career ranked sixth in program history with 90 goals and 10th with 110 points.
Dominiak made her 66th career start, one shy of matching the program record, and won two ground balls and caused one turnover. She ranks fourth at GW with 122 career ground balls and fifth with 56 caused turnovers.
Hoffman made nine saves on 35 shots faced and finishes her career second at GW with 420 saves in 53 career games.
Joy led GW with five draws to conclude her four-year career 11th in the category with 65.
