PURCHASE, NY -- George Washington's Martin Liu shot a second-round 74 Sunday to post a 153, just one stroke behind Harvard's Seiji Liu for the individual title in the 45-player field at the Century Intercollegiate men's golf tournament in Purchase, NY. Liu's runner-up finish mirrored that of the Colonials who, despite shooting the lowest team round on Sunday (301), was just one shot off the pace set by tournament champion Harvard.
The event, hosted by Yale at the par 71, 6,845-yard Century Country Club, was played at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, MD, last year. This year, weather played a significant role during Saturday's first round as heavy rains, high wind gusts and cold temperatures played havoc up and down the East Coast. Unfortunately for the Colonials, their tee time draw on Saturday was at noon while the first teams to tee off began around 10 a.m., and were making the turn well before the heaviest rains pounded the course located 30 minutes north of New York City. The impact of Saturday's inclement weather was in evidence as the Colonials combined to shave 27 shots during Sunday's rain-free round following Saturday's 328 that found them in fourth place.
The next-lowest Colonial after Liu was junior Brandon Rukin whose 14-over 156 (82-74) was four strokes better than teammates Brendan Barrack (85-75) and Andres Pumariega (82-78), each with a 160. Liu's first-round 79 was tied for fifth after Saturday.
GW also sent a four-member B Team to Annapolis to compete in Navy's Spring Invitational. After GW sophomore Manny Tulumaris was forced to withdraw with a nagging shoulder injury during the first round, the Colonials were unable to post a team score with the requisite four scores. Of the three Colonials that competed at Navy, freshman Graham Lawyer carded a 13-over-par 155 (77-78) to tie for 29th place in the 104-player field. Fellow freshman Benton Kircher tied for 55th with a 160 (78-82) and Brennan Wallman fired a 168 (81-87).
The Colonials will now have two weeks to prepare for the Atlantic 10 Conference championship, April 29-May 1, at the par-72, 7,003-yard El Campeon course at the Mission Inn Resort near Orlando, FL.
