AMHERST, MA - George Washington women's lacrosse got a hat trick from junior Megan Seidman, but No. 15 Massachusetts had six players with three-or-more goals and the A-10 leading Minutewomen handed the Colonials a 21-6 loss at McGuirk Stadium Friday afternoon.
The loss drops GW (5-10, 2-3 A-10) into a three-way tie for fourth place in the A-10 along with Duquesne and St. Bonaventure. UMass (12-2, 5-0 A-10) secured one of the top two seeds for the A-10 Championship with its fifth consecutive victory.
The Minutewomen scored twice in the opening 1:33 before junior Casey Disharoon got the Colonials on the scoreboard on an assist from classmate Sarah Phillips at the 27:22 mark to make it 2-1.
Nationally ranked UMass rolled from that point, scoring 10 straight goals between the 26:41 and 14:42 marks for a 12-1 advantage. Six different players scored for the Minutewomen during the 10-goal run, led by three from Nina Sarcona. GW managed just one shot, while UM netted 10-of-12 shots during the game-changing run.
Seidman netted back-to-back goals, with assists by senior Mia Breheny and Phillips, to move GW back within single digits at 12-3 with 9:48 left before halftime. However, UM closed the period with three more tallies, including Jackie Lyons' third goal on a free-position shot a second before intermission, to surge to a 15-3 edge at the break.
Breheny scored her team-leading 32nd goal of the season on GW's only free-position shot of the game with 14:21 left to make it 18-4. Seidman and senior Audrey Joy scored consecutive goals, with Breheny assisting Joy's marker to complete her three-point day, to move to 20-6 with six minutes remaining.
Lauren Terracciano joined Sarcona, Lyons, Cori Murray and Haley Smith with three goals on the contest's final goal with 3:11 left for the 21-6 final margin. UM leading scorer Katie Ferris tallied twice in each half to lead all players with four goals.
Seidman and Breheny both finished with three points and Phillips added two to pace GW, which lost to UM a fifth-straight time to fall to 3-8 in the all-time series.
Sophomore Jess Hicks played the final 42 minutes in cage and made five saves on 24 shots faced, won three ground balls and caused two turnovers. Senior Liz Hoffman allowed 12 goals on 15 shots faced in the opening 18 minutes.
Katie Florence (one save) and Chelsea Corell combined for one save on GW's 10 shots in split duties. Sarcona won five draws to help the hosts to a 17-11 lead in the category, while three players joined Hicks with three ground balls to lead UM to a 21-9 edge.
GW plays its final road game of the season Sunday at Saint Joseph's (5-9, 1-4 A-10). Opening draw is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
