Softball Shuts Out Iona, Falls to Fairleigh Dickinson

NORFOLK, VA- The George Washington softball team split their Sunday games in the Spartan Invitational, hosted by Norfolk State. The Colonials (2-2) shutout preseason MAAC favorite Iona 3-0, but fell 7-5 to Fairleigh Dickinson in the last game of the tournament.
Junior Kara Clauss tossed a complete game in the shutout of Iona (5-3) to improve to 2-1 on the season. Clauss gave up five hits, struck out five and walked two.
The Coloinals got on the board in the fourth inning, when Sandi Moynihan sacrificed Chelsea Curcio and Courtney Martin to third and second. Curcio scored the Colonials first run of the game on a passed ball by Iona's catcher.
Senior Katie Terrazas led-off the Colonials' half of the fifth with a double to right center, knocking out Iona's starting pitcher Alyssa Maiese. With runners on the corners and one out, Terrazas scored on a wild pitch while Amanda Zakeri stole second, continuing to third. Zakeri scored on the next at-bat by Clauss to put the Colonials up 3-0 on the Gaels.
In the Colonials second game of the day, GW got on the board first against Fairleigh Dickinson (3-1) in the second inning. Tara Fogarty doubled through the left side of the field and advanced to third on a Clauss sac bunt. Lauren Wilson scored Fogarty on a double to right center for the first run of the game.
The Knights jumped ahead 2-1 in the third on two hits and two Colonials errors. FDU tacked on more runs in the fourth inning batting in two runs on one hit.
Terrazas got her second hit of the game in the fifth, and advanced to second on a fielding error during Fogarty's at-bat. Terrazas and Fogarty executed a double steal to move up sixty feet on the base paths. Clauss singled in Terrazas, as Fogarty advanced to third.
Zakeri, pinch running for Clauss, and Fogarty completed the innings second double steal of the inning, with Fogarty scoring the second run of the inning.
The Colonials were unable to keep the Knights off the bases in the bottom of the sixth, allowing two more runs score on two hits and one error.
GW tried to mount a comeback in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with no outs. Terrazas and Clauss each batted in one run, but the Colonials left a runner on when the inning ended on a groundout and the score 7-5.
Junior Heidi Penna took the loss in five innings of work, allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits, walking four and striking out seven. Freshman Courtney Martin saw her first inning of work against the Knits. Martin gave up two unearned runs on two hits and struck out one.
GW opens the 2011 home portion of their schedule on March 1 with a double-header against UMBC. The first game between the Colonials and the Retrievers is set to start at 1:00 p.m. at Mount Vernon Field, with the second game starting shortly after.
