
Softball Splits Home Opener Against UMBC

WASHINGTON, DC-- George Washington softball split their 2011 home opener against UMBC at Mount Vernon Field on Tuesday. UMBC (2-5) took game one, 8-5, while GW (3-3) came back to win the second game, 4-2.
The Colonials jumped out to a quick 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second, getting doubles from Chelsea Lenhart and Katie Terrazas. GW added a third run in the second, as Colonials batters bunted Lauren Wilson around the bases.
In the visitors half of the third, UMBC combined four hits, drew two walks and a hit batter to score five runs, jumping ahead 6-3.
The Colonials came to bat in the fifth down, 8-3, drew a lead off walk from Jordyn O'Donnell. Lenhart scored the first run of the inning with a triple down the left field line. Terrazas singled in Lenhart for the second run in the next at-bat. GW left two batters on, ending the inning with two fly outs and the score at 8-5.
In the second game, both teams got on the board in the third inning. The Retrievers put two on the board on four hits, while Sandi Moynihan scored the Colonials run on base hit and a three-base error on the right fielder.
GW bats caught fire in the bottom of the sixth. Chelsea Curcio hit a lead off single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Terrazas. Tara Fogarty singled Curcio to third and scored on a passed ball, while pinch-runner Amanda Zakeri went from first to third. Zakeri later scored on a passed ball, putting the Colonials up 3-2. Julie Orlandi, pinch running for Clauss, was doubled in by Jillian Stanley for GW's fourth run.
Kara Clauss (3-2) tossed six and a third innings in the two games, striking out two and walking four, while allowing five runs on 11 hits. Heidi Penna got the start in both games tossing four and two-thirds innings. Penna struck out three, walked two and gave up four runs on seven hits. Courtney Martin threw three innings in game one, striking out three.
GW returns to Mount Vernon Field to take on the Army Black Knights for four games on Saturday and Sunday, March 5 and 6. The first game of both days' double headers is set to start at 12:00 p.m., with game two beginning near 2:00 p.m.
