Women's Lacrosse Drops City Game at American, 17-8

WASHINGTON, DC - Juniors Sarah Phillips and Megan Seidman each totaled three points, but the George Washington women's lacrosse team allowed six unanswered goals in the second half in a 17-8 loss at crosstown rival American Wednesday afternoon.
Phillips netted a hat trick and Seidman finished with a goal and two assists to lead GW (1-2). American (1-1) picked up its first win of the season behind a game-high five goals and six points from Kimberly Collins as well as hat tricks from three different players.
Seidman, Phillips and senior Audrey Joy scored to keep the Colonials even with the Eagles, 3-3, at the 16:53 mark of the first half. However, AU would close the period with a 5-1 run sparked by three goals from Collins to grab an 8-4 advantage at halftime.
The difference remained four goals as the teams' traded the opening six goals of the second half. Joy tallied her second goal of the game to make it 11-7 with 17:11 remaining.
Collins and Bernadette Maher each scored twice and two other Eagles registered goals over the next 15 minutes to help the hosts build a 17-7 cushion with 95 seconds to play.
Phillips completed her hat trick with 38 seconds left to produce the 17-8 final margin.
Joy added a team-high three ground balls and two caused turnovers along with her two goals.
Senior goalkeeper Liz Hoffman made eight saves and allowed 14 goals in 51:51 of action. Sophomore Jess Hicks stopped three shots and surrendered three goals in the final 8:09 in cage.
GW plays its first nationally ranked opponent of the season Saturday at ninth-ranked James Madison at 1:00 pm.
