Women's Lacrosse Dumped by Drexel, 14-9

WASHINGTON, DC - Sophomore Nicole Lacey's four goals and five draw controls weren't enough to offset Charlotte Wood's game-high six goals as Drexel knocked off the George Washington women's lacrosse team, 14-9, at Mount Vernon Field Saturday.
GW (1-1) surrendered the first four goals of the game and found itself playing catch-up the rest of the afternoon. Trailing 4-0 with 11:07 left in the first half, the Colonials scored three goals in a span of 4:24 to close within 4-3 with 5:25 left in the period.
Wood completed her first-half hat trick to give the Dragons a 6-3 lead just two minutes later, but the Colonials replied with goals from junior Megan Seidman and senior Mia Breheny to trail 6-5 at intermission.
Drexel (1-0) struck first in the second half to lead 7-5, but senior Audrey Joy answered to pull GW within a goal for the third time at 7-6 with 23:26 left.
Wood then netted the first of her second-half hat trick at the 21:47 mark to spark a 4-0 run that gave the Dragons an 11-6 cushion with 15:16 left.
Lacey netted the Colonials' final three goals, the last of which pulled the hosts within 12-9 with 4:08 left. Wood capped her six-goal effort 84 seconds later and the Dragons added an insurance marker with 22 seconds left for the 14-9 final margin.
Junior Sarah Phillips finished with three points on a goal and two assists. Junior Hilary Quinn collected a game-high six of GW's 23 ground balls.
Senior goalkeeper Liz Hoffman matched her career-high with 17 saves on 37 shots faced. Whitney Johnson stopped seven of GW's 23 shots to earn the win for the Dragons.
GW is back in action Wednesday at city rival American at 3:00 pm.
