AMHERST, MA -- George Washington freshman Nemanja Mikic led all players with 20 points as the Colonials overcame a rough shooting first half and put together a 17-0 run late in the second half to defeat Massachusetts, 59-51, in an A-10 game Sunday afternoon at the Mullins Center. It marked GW's sixth A-10 victory of the season matching its league win total from last season.
UMass went the final 6:13 without a field goal. GW's defense forced 19 turnovers and converted them into 22 points.
Massachusetts (13-10, 5-5 A-10) was led by Gary Correia's team-high 15 points and Sean Carter's 11 rebounds, Correia was the only Minuteman in double figures as the Colonials held leading scorer Anthony Gurley to his season-low seven points. Gurley averaged 19.9 coming into Sunday's game.
GW shot just 24 percent in the first half en route to a season-low 18 points but still trailed by only six, 24-18, at the break. Both teams struggled from the line with the Colonials converting just 53 percent (16-of-30) and the Minutemen hitting just 63 percent (17-27). UMass's 14 field goals was a season-low by a GW opponent this season.
The Colonials made 7-of-19 from beyond the arc, including six by Mikic. Dwayne Smith added a 14-point, 10 rebound effort for his second double-double of the season and third of his career.
GW (13-12, 6-5 A-10) will have nearly a week to prepare for a trip to La Salle (12-13, 4-6 A-10) for the second regular-season meeting with the Explorers on Saturday, Feb. 19, at Tom Gola Arena.
