WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday at Charles E. Smith Center when the Colonials host Virginia Tech in a non-conference match at 2:00 p.m.
GW (1-1) is coming off a 73-68 loss on Wednesday evening to Morgan State in its home opener. Junior Brooke Wilson led all players with a career-high 17 points while senior Sara Mostafa (15 points) and junior Danni Jackson (11) posted double figures, but it was not enough to stifle the sharpshooting Lady Bears. Morgan State shot 52 percent (11-of-21) from beyond the arc and 46 percent from the field for the game to send GW to its first loss of the season.
The Colonials used a late 13-3 run to pull within three points with under a minute left. Morgan State used efficient free-throw shooting to maintain a three point lead for the remainder of the game, en route to a 73-68 victory.
Virginia Tech enters Saturday's game with a 1-1 record with a season-opening victory over Old Dominion and a loss on Wednesday to Charlotte. The Hokies, who were 11-19 in 2010-11 with a 1-13 mark in the ACC, were predicted to finish 12th in the 12-team ACC Preseason Poll.
Junior Alyssa Fenyn is the top returning scorer for the Hokies, averaging 9.4 points per game last season. She also ranked second on the team with 67 assists.
GW leads the all-time series 10-9, with a 6-2 mark at Smith Center. The last meeting between the two teams was on March 16, 2002, in the first round of the Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT), a 68-52 Virginia Tech victory.
Virginia Tech is led by first-year head coach Dennis Wolff. Wolff was previously the head coach at Boston University where he was 247-197 in 15 years at the helm of the program. He is the school's all-time leader in victories.
Wolff is a 1978 graduate of the University of Connecticut and played under former GW Associate Athletic Director Dom Perno when Perno served as head coach of the Huskies.
