DAYTON, Ohio - Junior Lauren Whyte finished with 14 kills and 10 digs for her sixth double-double of the season but the George Washington volleyball team was unable to solve Dayton Friday night in a 3-0 loss at Frericks Center. Set scores were 26-24, 25-19, 25-10.
Whyte and sophomore Rachael Goss (10 kills) combined for 24 kills to lead the offense but the duo was unable to lead GW (17-8, 6-5 A-10) past Dayton's (19-5, 11-0 A-10) dominant defensive front. The Flyers posted 15.5 team blocks while holding the Colonials to a .028 attack percentage.
Dayton was led by Megan Campbell (10 blocks) and Rachel Krabacher (14 kills, four blocks).
A marathon opening frame that featured 19 ties and six lead changes set the tone for the evening. The Colonials held a late 19-17 lead but the Flyers' middle blockers combined to post seven team blocks in the frame that engineered a come back that resulted in a 26-24 win to give UD a 1-0 lead.
The Colonials were held to a combined -.027 attack percentage in the second and third set as Dayton clinched the match with 25-19 and 25-10 victories, respectively.
Redshirt junior Katie Crosby finished with 22 assists and eight digs while junior Candace Silva-Martin led the defense with a match-high 17 digs.
GW will open its final home stand of the season Friday night at 7 p.m. against Saint Louis. The Colonials were swept on the road, 3-0, by the Billikens on Sept. 25. The Colonials then face Duquesne Sunday at 1 p.m., in MacKenzie Knox's senior day finale at Charles E. Smith Center.
The Colonials are now 6-5 in the conference and must finish in the top six of the standings in order to qualify for the Atlantic 10 Championship tournament, Nov. 18-20 at Dayton's Frericks Center. GW has four conference matches left.
The GW volleyball program will welcome back former All-American standout Svetlana Vturyina ('96) at Friday's match. A four-time letterwinner from 1992-95, Vturyina is the Colonials' only volleyball All-American (in 1994 by the AVCA) and owns both the NCAA record for "kills" in a match (56) and in a career (3,043).
