NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - George Washington sophomore middle blocker Jamie Armstrong has been named the Atlantic 10 Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. It marks her second A-10 weekly honor this season.
Armstrong helped the Colonials to an even 1-1 week, including a five-set victory over Xavier Sunday afternoon. The Monroe, Wisc., native totaled 10 blocks in the two contests, including one solo and nine assisted while averaging 1.25 blocks per set.
She was instrumental in GW's come-from-behind victory over Xavier, amassing eight blocks while helping limit the Musketeers to a .185 hitting percentage. She led the way defensively in the decisive fifth set, totaling four (one solo, three assisted) of her eight blocks to help the Colonials complete the stunning comeback.
GW (13-6, 2-3 A-10) returns to action Friday against Fordham at the Charles E. Smith Center at 6 p.m. Fans who attend the match are encouraged to stay for Colonials Invasion, which starts immediately following the match and highlights GW's men's and women's basketball teams.
