Colonials Fall in Tight Meet Against Patriots at Smith Center

WASHINGTON, DC -- The GW men's and women's swimming teams honored four seniors with a tough battle at Charles E. Smith Center pool on Sunday against George Mason. The Patriots defeated the Colonials men's squad 132-127, as the Patriots women's squad beat the Colonials 132-126.
"You can't fault their effort, they stepped up after every challenge," said head coach Dan Rhinehart. "Everyone wanted to do well to send the seniors out on a strong note. It was a tough fought meet."
Senior Noelle Miesfeld won the 200-yard butterfly (2:13.79), as fellow senior Paola Leor won the 50-yard freestyle (23.73), the 100-yard freestyle (52.55), and the 100-yard butterfly (57.42).
Leor also teamed up with freshman Sloan Saunders, Caroline Myers, and Sydney Saunders to win the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:39.43).
Myers swam three middle distance events for the Colonials, winning the 200-yard backstroke (2:08.46), the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.32) and took second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.88).
Kristina Martin stepped up in the distance races for the Colonials. Martin won the 1000-yard freestyle (10:33.92) and third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:13.53).
The Colonials men's squad won seven events against the Patriots Sunday, including the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:25.96) and the 200-yard medley relay (1:36.30).
Sophomore Phillip Graeter won the 200-yard butterfly (1:56.74), 200-yard backstroke, (1:54.45) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:13.54).
In the 50-yard freestyle, GW swept the top three finishes. Marshall Seedorff (21.48), Niccolo Wilson (22.36), and Luke Quimby (22.51) went one-two-thee for the Colonials.
The next event the men's squad one upped themselves, sweeping the top four finishes in the 100-yard freestyle. Alex Etz (47.89), Seedorff (48.71), Niklas Glenesk (48.89) and Wilson (49.16), each earned points, helping the Colonials pull closer to the Patriots.
The Colonials will now start the tapering process in preparation for the 2011 Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships, Feb. 23-26, in Buffalo, NY
