GW Swimming Splits Double Dual Against Towson, Howard

TOWSON, MD -- The GW men's and women's swimming teams split their double dual meet on Saturday when they faced off against Howard and Towson at the Tiger's Burdick Pool. The GW men's squad fell to Towson 143-114 and defeated Howard 151-86. The GW women's swim team lost to Towson 201-56, while defeating Howard 136-93.
The Colonials earned eight first-place finishes against the Tigers and Bison. Freshman distance swimmer Caroline Myers led the squad with three individual victories. Myers won the 1000-yard freestyle (10:18.05), 500-yard freestyle (5:02.99) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.00).
Freshman middle distance swimmer Taylor Cole had as strong day for the Colonials as well. Cole earned points for GW with two fourth-place finishes in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle.
The men's squad had four different members finish atop their respective events. Sophomore Niklas Glenesk took the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.52), while Luke Quimby took third (1:47.97).
Alex Etz finished first in the men's 100-yard backstroke (52.82), just ahead of teammate Jake Mortensen in second-place (54.14). Mortensen came back to win the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:56.77.
Sophomore Phillip Graeter also tallied a first-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (1:56.60), again with Mortensen finishing second (2:01.49).
Stephen Nelson collected some key points for the Colonials in his three individual races. He finished second in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:58.32), third in the 100-yard freestyle (48.71), and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle (22.39).
In the last event of the meet, Quimby, Nelson, Glenesk and Etz teamed up to win the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 3:11.47.
The Colonials are back in action Sunday, when the squads host area rival George Mason at 12:00 p.m. at Charles E. Smith Center. GW will recognize five seniors, Sarah Beggs, Konrad Kopczynski, Paola Leor, Andrew Maguire and Noelle Miesfeld, prior to the start of the meet.
