WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's tennis team was selected to finish second at the 2011 Atlantic 10 Championships in a vote by A-10 Conference coaches, the Conference announced on Monday.
"We're very appreciative of the recognition our team received in the pre-season polls that came out earlier today," said 2010 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, Dawn Buth. "This is evidence of the competitiveness and mental toughness we demonstrated throughout last season and the strong finish we displayed at last year's A-10 Championship."
The Colonials return all three A-10 All-Conference selections from last season in junior Jacqueline Corba and sophomores Mimi Hamling and Dorota Lysienia. Senior captain Jennifer Hirsh was a solid contributor at No. 4 singles for a Colonials squad that had its first 11-win season since 2001-02. Corba won the deciding match over Charlotte that sent the Colonials into the Championship finals in 2010.
GW opens the 2011 season this weekend in Philadelphia where it takes on Drexel at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 28. The Colonials remain in Philadelphia to take on Penn on Sunday, Jan. 30 at 1:00 p.m.
"However, the pre-season poll is a reflection of last year's results and there is a deep pool of talented, competitive, and eager teams in the Conference this year," said Buth. "This season, we'll need to write our own history."
The Colonials have four Atlantic 10 teams on this season's schedule, traveling to take on Temple and Duquesne in back-to-back weekend matches. In March, the team will face Richmond and Saint Joseph's on the road.
The 2011 Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Tennis Championship will be April 8-10, at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, VA.
