GW Gymnastics Finishes In Second Place In Season Opener

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University gymnastics team opened their 2011 season on Sunday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Center, finishing in second place out of seven competing schools at the Lindsey Ferris/GW Invitational. The Colonials finished with a team total of 191.975 while East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) rivals North Carolina and Rutgers finished in first and third place, respectively.
Senior Leslie Delima shined for the Colonials, taking first-place in the the floor exercise (tieing her personal record of 9.875), second-placed on the balance beam (9.825), and setting a personal record with a 9.825 on the vault for a second-place finish. Delima also finished in second place in All-Around with a personal record 39.175.
Sophomore Kayla Carto also had a strong afternoon for the Colonials, finishing in fifth-place in the All-Around with a score of 38.625. Carto excelled on vault tieing her career-high score of 9.750.
Junior Brittany Burnham also had a career day as she set a personal record on the uneven bars with a 9.550. She also finished in 12th-place on the balance beam with a score of 9.600.
After a slow start to the afternoon, the Colonials stormed back to capture second-place thanks to strong team efforts on the balance beam (48.200) and the floor exercise (48.275), their final two events of the day.
The Colonials newcomers performed well in their debut meet at Foggy Bottom. Freshman Betsy Zander recorded 9.500 score on the balance beam. Zander also finished third on the team with a 9.700 in the floor exercise and 37.375 in the all-around. Freshman Taylor Henderson finished third on the team with a 9.600 performance on the vault.
The Colonials will return to action on Saturday when they travel to the Wolstein Center in Cleveland, OH for a meet with host Kent State, BYU and Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
