Volleyball Wins Third Straight, Sweeps UMBC, 3-0

BALTIMORE, MD -- George Washington defeated UMBC, 3-0, Tuesday night at the Retriever Activities Center. The Colonials won by the scores, 25-17, 25-9, 25-17. It marked GW's third straight victory.
GW (5-2) was led by senior co-captain Katie Zulandt with a match-high 12 kills in 16 swings and just one error for a robust .688 attacking percentage. Sophomore Lauren Whyte was the only other Colonial with double-figure kills (10) as all 15 players saw action. Katie Crosby and Hayley Woodford split time at setter and combined to assist on 31 of GW's 40 kills on the evening. Libero Candace Silva-Martin added a match-high 13 digs.
UMBC (2-3) was led by junior Iman Kennedy with five blocks and a .231 hitting percentage. All five matches played by UMBC this season have been 3-0 sweeps.
The Colonials out-hit UMBC, .301 to .073 and GW recorded nine service aces to the three for the Retrievers. UMBC won the battle at the net by outblocking GW, 9-4.
GW got off to a slow start in the first set falling behing 5-1 before reeling off six unanswered points fueled by three kills from Zulandt. The Colonials' lead ballooned to 18-9 and they coasted to the 25-17 triumph. GW never trailed in the second and third sets.
GW (5-2) next plays Friday, Sept. 10, against Cleveland State (6-0) in the Cleveland State Invitational. The Colonials have won all three previous meetings with CSU. Kent State (4-4) and Morgan State (1-5) also make up the field in the CSU tournament. It marks the first meeting between GW and Kent State and the Colonials lead, 6-0, in the all-time series with Morgan State.
